The purpose of the Valentine’s Day Noun/Verb Word Sort is to determine if a word is a noun or a verb. Students use their knowledge of to determine whether a word is a ‘noun’ or a ‘verb.’
There are different ways to use the Valentine’s Day Noun/Verb Word Sort with your students. Use as a:
- category sort,
- word sort, and
- time filler.
Give students a set of word cards and have them sort the cards into categories. Once students have had time to sort all their cards, ask them to share their categories with the rest of the class. Encourage students to explain how they came up with their categories.
Give students the noun and verb heading cards and a set of word cards. Ask students to look at each card. Students place the card under the appropriate heading. You may also want to add the word sort activity to your class learning centers.
Keep the word cards at your desk. Whenever you have a few spare minutes, draw a card or two from the stack and have students identify whether the card is a “noun” or a “verb.” Encourage students to give reasons for their answers.
