I love to use tiered resources whenever possible! It helps to target student learning so all students can be successful. All students have activities that “look” alike but they target different learning needs. Today, I want to talk about using tiered math prompts with your class to help them understand and practice problem solving at a level they can be successful. Join me all week for other teaching ideas for spring!
Math Problem Solving
Problem solving is a skill that will follow students throughout their entire school career … and into life. The skill of problem solving can be practiced by students at the level they are working at. In any given classroom, students have a wide range of abilities and learning needs. If students are focused on learning their basic skills, use problem solving prompts that involve questions using the basic skills. These are presented in this blogpost as tier one prompts. Students who have mastered their basic skills, and moved on to double digit addition and subtraction without regrouping, can develop their problem solving skills using the tier two prompts. Finally, students who have moved on to double digit addition and subtraction with regrouping can use the tier three math prompts.
