Add a placemat to a group of students and you have a great strategy to find out what students know about insects. Have you ever used the placemat strategy in your teaching? If not, read on and try it out in your classroom!
How to Use Placemat Strategy
Step One: Put Students Into Groups
Divide your students into groups of four. Put students of different ability levels and learning styles into groups together.
Step Two: Use Templates or Butcher Paper
Give each student a large sheet of butcher paper, or a placemat template like the one below. I like using large sheets of butcher paper because it provides lots of room for students to write down their ideas and draw pictures of their learning. Draw a box in the centre of the paper and write the word, “Insects.” Divide the paper into four boxes as shown in the template below. Assign one box to each of the four students in the group. If you would rather use a template, copy the one below on 11X17 paper.
Step Three: Write and Draw Ideas
Students write and draw all the ideas they have about insects in their assigned box. Give students enough time to complete this activity.
Step Four: Discuss Ideas
Students share and discuss their ideas with their group members.
Step Five: Determine Key Ideas
As a group, students come up with two or three key ideas.
Step Six: Share With Class
Gather together as a class. Ask each group to share their ideas with the group. Consider writing these ideas on chart paper and adding to the list throughout the insect unit.
