Are you wondering how to use formative assessment in your classroom? Formative assessment has changed my teaching! I am continually looking at work students complete or answers they give and thinking, “How can I next help this student?” So many of our day-to-day activities can be used to formatively assess student learning.
What is formative assessment?
Formative assessment is meant to gather information on student learning. It is used during a lesson or unit to track student progress and to help students and teachers make changes in order for students to learn and master skills and concepts.
What are group formative assessments?
Group formative assessments are given to a class to get a general idea of student understanding. Group formative assessment strategies include giving a thumbs up or down, the fist to five strategy, and the turn and talk.
What are individual formative assessments?
Individual formative assessments target individual students so teachers can get a clear understanding of what each student knows and what learning opportunities are still needed. Individual formative assessments include exit cards, learning logs, and the list ten things strategy.
